Da una parte nulla sembra essere più lontano della musica dal mondo della natura: la musica è un'invenzione prettamente umana; gli strumenti sono creazione dell'uomo ed emettono suoni quali in natura non si sono mai uditi; le costruzioni linguistiche , grammaticali e sintattiche della musica sono quanto di più artificiale si può immaginare, frutto di un lungo processo storico; inoltre la ricezione della musica, almeno di quella più complessa e più strutturata della nostra tradizione occidentale, presume per lo più un acculturamento che non proviene certo da una familiarità con il mondo della natura. D'altra parte non si può non rimanere stupiti e perplessi nel constatare che nella lunga e varia storia del pensiero musicale, i filosofi, i pensatori, i musicologi, e anche i musicisti, molto spesso di richiamano alla natura e imbastiscono curiosi intrecci e a volte sposalizi più o meno riusciti tra la musica e il concetto di natura
